Biography:
Abigail "Ma" Hunkel was the original Red Tornado, a DC Comics superheroine. Introduced in 1939, she wasn't a meta-human or mystical being. Ma was a middle-aged, overweight woman who lived above her grocery store with her sons.
Motivated by a desire to fight local crime and inspired by comic book heroes, Abigail created her own costume, complete with saucepan helmet and makeshift cyclone-generating devices built into her pants. The costume was constructed partially from spare parts around the shop. She operated primarily in Gotham City.
While comical in appearance, the Red Tornado proved surprisingly effective. Her sheer audacity and unpredictable nature often caught criminals off guard. Her sons often assisted in her crime fighting antics, calling themselves the Tornado Tots.
Importantly, Ma Hunkel was a charter member of the All-Star Squadron, solidifying her place as one of the earliest female superheroes and a pioneering figure in DC Comics history. She paved the way for female characters in comics who are relatable, but still brave and heroic.
